A Merry Christmas to all from all of us at FRI Media!

Main Main

In a blink of an eye, we are approaching Christmas and year end! 2025 has, like all years prior, left its imprint on us and we have left our imprint on it. We gained loved ones and have lost loved ones, made new friends and lost some friends.

That brings us to time. Time is never promised. We might not always appreciate the value of time; however, we fully understand it when it runs out. Let us make the most of time now and in the future. Hug your loved ones, spend time with your family, friends, colleagues and pets. Time is precious and is also priceless. It is the most beautiful gift you can give!

With Christmas around the corner, we would like to share this inspirational message from the North Pole, “Just remember, the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart.”

As we are readying ourselves for 2026, let’s take our lessons learnt with us and use them as stepping stones into the New Year, embracing its opportunities and challenges with open arms and guiding and supporting others through the year ahead. And above all, share your lessons learnt and be mentor to those around you, irrelevant of your or their rank/position.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to all our readers and advertisers for their support! But also a big thank you to those who regularly submit articles and photos on incidents, ensuring that the industry stays updated. Your support is priceless!

To all our first responders that are on duty during the Festive Season, we wish you an uneventful period and, in the event of an incident, a positive outcome. To those travelling on holiday, travel safe and enjoy the rest and to those staying at home, spending time with family and friends, may it be a memorable time!

The Fire and Rescue International offices are closed for the Festive Season and will reopen in January 2026. This is the last newsletter for this year. We trust that you have enjoyed the weekly FRI Newsletter during 2025 and found it informative and useful. Keep reading and supporting us in 2026!

Wishing all a safe, incident-free and Blessed Christmas and a very positive, proactive, happy and inspirational 2026!

Europe faces worst wildfire year on record as fire seasons grow longer and more destructive

The 2024 forest fires report from the Commission’s Joint Research Centre confirms a longer and more intense fire season. Major fires have increased every year since 2017 and the 2024 data confirm the upward trend. The 2024 fire season ended with a total burnt area of 383 317 hectares. While this is lower than the 500 000 hectares burnt in 2023 due in part to intermittent rainfall across the Mediterranean during spring and summer, it is still above the 17-year average of 354 185 hectares. In 2024, 8 343 fires were reported in total.

Fitness: Every Firefighter should train in FULL GEAR! Here’s why…

Should firefighters train in full gear? It may be controversial but I think every firefighter should train in full gear once a month or at least once per quarter. In this video, I take you through a workout wearing my full gear and SCBA. It’s hot, it’s heavy and it pushes me to the edge, physically and mentally. This isn’t about looking tough, it’s about being prepared when it counts.
