Providing N95s for wildland firefighters is a step forward, but we must do more to protect them from smoke
WLFFMasks WLFFMasks

Wildland firefighters manage, suppress, and prescribe fires on our nation’s public lands, protecting all of us. Yet it is becoming ever clearer that we as a nation are failing to protect them. Tenacious reporting from the New York Times recently detailed the staggering impacts of wildfire smoke inhalation on wildland firefighters’ physical, mental, and financial health. Impacts can include respiratory distress, cardiovascular effects, and increased risk of cancer. Given what we already know about the risks posed by wildfire smoke inhalation, it’s a failure that for the last several decades, the federal government has not provided any suitable respiratory protection for wildland firefighters.

Cape Town’s most famous trails see twin rescues, WSAR
WSARTwinRescues WSARTwinRescues

In two separate incidents on Saturday, 21 September 2025, Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams responded to assist injured hikers on two of Cape Town’s most popular trails. “We’re seeing a steady rise in callouts as the weather improves,” said David Nel, spokesperson for Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR). It’s heartening to see so many people returning to the trails, but we urge all outdoor enthusiasts to remain cautious. Recent rainfall has left some sections of the mountain wet and slippery, increasing the risk of slips and falls. The first call for assistance came from Lion’s Head, where a 36-year-old hiker slipped and injured her ankle while descending the trail near the staples.”

BrooklynFire BrooklynFire
BrooklynFire BrooklynFire

Firefighters continue to put out hotspots nearly 24 hours after a massive fire ripped through a large warehouse used by artists in Brooklyn. “Just after 11h30 Wednesday night, 17 September 2025, the FDNY responded to a 5-alarm fire at 481 Van Brunt Street in Brooklyn. Units arrived in under three minutes. Over 250 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. Two firefighters were transported with minor injuries. “This building is a very large, four storey commercial building. Upon arrival, we had heavy fire on the second, third, fourth floor, and through the roof. Due to the amount of fire and the structural stability of the building, we removed our members and attacked the fire from the exterior, from the front and the rear with large calibre streams. The rear of this building is on the water, so we called in Marine 9, and we used some of their large calibre streams to extinguish the fire,” said Chief of Operations Kevin Woods.
