Fourth Annual Women in EMS, Disaster and Fire Conference 2025 held in Sandton, Johannesburg

The Fourth Annual Women in EMS, Disaster and Fire Conference 2025 was held on 7 and 8 August 2025 at the Southern Sun Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg by Eminence Events.

This year’s theme, ‘Resilience in Action: Empowering women leaders for a resilient tomorrow’ attracted women leaders from around the country, representing the fire, rescue, disaster management as well as the emergency medical services.

The first day of the event focussed on ‘Leadership, innovation and global collaboration’, with Bridgette Zungu deputy director of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health discussing ‘Leadership in the emergency medical service followed by ER24’s Shakira Cassim, who spoke about ‘Resilience and mental wellness in high stress professions’.

Charlotte Pillay, COO at HealthTech Leader, discussed how ‘The magnitude of successes is based on a thousand different tiny failures’ and Transnet’s Sanky Mahlangu spoke about “Empowering women in infrastructure safety and preparedness’.

Wimpie van Onselen of Dräger South Africa, one of the sponsors of the event, shared information on their product line up, inviting delegates to visit their exhibit, which showcased their product range for the fire and emergency services.

A panel discussion on ‘Creating inclusive, empowered workspaces for women in emergency services followed, with Tshidi Lemeko-Nkoyana as moderator and Sanky Mahlangu, Bridgette Zungu, Shakira Cassim and Charlotte Pillay as panellists during which delegates could ask questions .

Exxaro Resources’ Madelyne van Emmenis discussed via an online presentation ‘Workplace trauma, burnout and leadership longevity and Busisiwe Makhubu of Mnzhelele Fire Detection and Suppression shared a brief overview of their services and product offerings.

Pinkie Netshidzati Tshilidzi, shared an energy-filled presentation on the global landscape of women empowerment strategies and provided overview of the day’s presentations with a strong closing message of the importance of empowerment for women in EMS leadership positions and how they must assist those around them.

The second day started with a keynote address from Lebogang Mosotho, president of the Disaster Management Institute Southern Africa (DMISA), on ‘Crisis Leadership in action – lessons from women on the frontline, which was followed by a special address by MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, the MEC for the Gauteng Department of Health in which she said that the baton is in your hands. What footprints are you leaving behind?”

Dr TIou Raphela shared a presentation on the ‘Intersection of climate change and disaster management’, which was followed by Natasha Chetty of Cross Fire South Africa, who discussed ‘Fire risk assessment and tech- driven disaster preparedness’.

Chief fire officer and disaster manager for Lekwa Municipality, Chief Melony Shimane, discussed ‘Breaking barriers in fire services – women rising after which OR Tambo International Airport’s chief of Fire and Rescue, Chief Jabulephiwe Mpitso, presented on ‘Crisis decision-making under pressure.

The only male delegate, Aaron Dibane of Fast Medical Response provided some insight into his take home messages from the conference, adding that his male counterparts should attend conferences such as these in order to also learn from it and to assist their female counterparts on their leadership journey.

Nomathemba Mtshali of City of Johannesburg EMS provided a presentation with the closing reflections and core messages from all the presenters, reiterating the most important fact that change starts with us.

Western Cape records more fires but on fewer hectares for the past wildfire season

Minister Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning recently received a briefing from the Provincial Disaster Risk Management Centre on the past wildfire season. “We were very fortunate that there were no fatalities, serious injuries, or major infrastructure losses that occurred in wildfires during the past season. We believe this is a result of long-term investment in training, equipment and effective coordination between the various agencies involved”, Minister Bredell said.

After a gruelling 36-hour rescue exercise, the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s (SCDF) elite overseas disaster assistance team retained its UN INSARAG Heavy USAR classification, the highest international recognition for a disaster rescue team. During the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) external reclassification exercise that began on 19 August 2025, the SCDF Operation Lionheart contingent had to undergo multiple rescue scenarios, such as rescuing an “injured person” trapped behind a collapsed diagonal wall.

Simon’s Town firefighter breaks barriers: Amesha Bachan leads with strength and service, Cape Town

A fire-station platoon commander from Simon’s Town in Cape Town, Amesha Bachan, hopes to be a beacon of hope within her community. The 35-year-old platoon commander of the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services at the Ottery Fire Station, recently proved her mettle when she led a crew of seven during an emergency birth of a healthy baby boy at the fire station on Thursday morning, 24 July 2025. In an interview with People’s Post, Bachan shared her journey and unpacked the early challenges she encountered as a young firefighter and how she climbed the ranks.

Swift response by Tshwane Emergency Services prevents the spread of Pretoria North tyre factory fire

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department (ESD) confirms that a tyre factory in Pretoria North caught fire earlier today, 16 August 2025. Lindsay Mnguni, acting public information and media liaison officer at the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “Upon notification, multiple firefighting resources were dispatched by the Emergency Communication Centre and promptly arrived at the scene. Their primary objective was to secure the perimeter of the fire and prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding properties, which was achieved successfully. A firefighter suffered a minor injury during incident operations and was treated on the site but did not go to hospital.”

EU Civil Protection Mechanism responds to multiple wildfires across the continent

During the week of 14 August 2025, Greece, Spain, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Albania activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to help deal with forest fires, many of which are occurring simultaneously across Europe. On 13 August 2025 Spain activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for the first time ever for forest fires. The European Commission has quickly mobilised two rescEU planes stationed in France. Greece activated the Mechanism on 12 August. In response, the two Swedish rescEU planes currently in Bulgaria are expected to be deployed. Prepositioned firefighters from Czechia, Moldova and Romania also took part in the efforts to put out the fires.

Overstrand Municipality has taken another step toward improving fire safety in high-risk informal settlements by rolling out the latest phase of its smoke alarm installation programme. Backed by provincial funding, the initiative focuses on early fire detection and community awareness to help reduce the tragic loss of life, personal belongings and burn injuries often caused by fires in informal structures. With R500 000 received through the Municipal Service Delivery and Capacity Building Grant (2023/24), the municipality procured 1 577 smoke alarms, while an additional 310 units were purchased using Overstrand’s own funds, bringing the total to 1 887 devices.

A man from Lebanon will be celebrating 65 years of service in the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department next month. Bob Cady, who grew up in the town, joined the department right out of high school in September of 1960. The 83-year-old said people in the firehouse keep him feeling young. “It’s been a great adventure,” Cady said. “Right out of school. I was still working in town and it was convenient to answer calls.”

The City of Ekurhuleni has noted with concern the fire incident that broke out on Tuesday morning, 12 August 2025, at the Department of Home Affairs building in Germiston. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “Fire and Rescue Services engaged with fire suppression as the dual floors Home Affairs building was well alight in President Street, Germiston CBD. The call was received at around 08h00.”

Removing PFAS from firefighting equation not a simple computation

It sounds simple: remove harmful chemicals from firefighting foam to both keep public water supplies pure and protect the health of firefighters. But finding an effective substitute, figuring out how to pay for it and retraining firefighters adds several layers of complexity to a bill currently moving through the state Legislature, says Brian Kokkila, assistant chief for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. The bill in question aims to prohibit “the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of firefighting foam that contains toxic PFAS chemicals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl manmade substances that have been linked to a wide range of serious health issues, including cancer,” per a press release issued by Rep Brian Munroe, D-Bucks.

A new purpose-built £10 million fire station and training centre fit for 21st Century fire fighting was officially opened in Ramsgate in Kent, UK, on 5 February 2019. A brand new £10 million fire station and training centre officially opened in Ramsgate. The base supports 22 fire fighters from full-time Kent Fire and Rescue Service crews and 14 on-call fire fighters allowing them to be ready for emergencies any day of the year. Nick Chard, Chairman of the Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority, said the site was selected for its good location in terms of accessibility to key road networks and has been built to provide a reliable and efficient modern day service for local people. “As of 7 January 2019, it became home to whole-time crews and 14 on-call fire fighters, together providing an emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” said Chard.
